Seventh Annual Tech Prep Scholarship Golf Tournament

Ninety-four golfers from local businesses, high schools, and Weatherford College teed off at SugarTree Golf Course on Saturday Sept. 29 for the Seventh Annual Weatherford College Tech Prep Scholarship Golf Tournament.

In addition to the entree fees, area businesses sponsored holes and made contributions for the event that raised approximately $16,000, all of which will go directly to scholarships for area high school students to attend Weatherford College. At least 15 scholarships will be awarded from the funds raised in this year’s event, with the largest being $2,500. In the last four years, more than 40 area students have received scholarships that have come directly from funds raised by this tournament. These scholarships have ranged from $300 to $2,000 each.

Tech Prep is a federally funded, grant initiative that allows qualified technical students to get a head start on their college education by earning up to 16 hours of college credits while in high school. The Weatherford College Tech Prep Consortium must rely on other sources for funding scholarships since federal guidelines prohibit the establishment of scholarships with grant money.

“These scholarships are an investment in Weatherford’s economic future,” said Dr. Kevin Eaton, Weatherford College Tech Prep Consortium Director. “We are delighted to have area businesses committed to this cause, particularly Weatherford Regional Medical Center, the Title Sponsor of the Tournament, which made a $2,500 contribution.”

Twenty-four teams participated in the four-person scramble from the Independent School Districts of Brock, Chico, Boyd, Millsap, Graford, Huckabay, Poolville, Weatherford, and Weatherford College. A team representing Texas Wesleyan University and the Army National Guard also participated. Local teams from Weatherford Regional Medical System, Crown-Deison Properties, Jerry’s GM, Johnson Controls, First National Bank, Weatherford Aerospace, and Weatherford National Bank also played in the tournament. Three teams drove all the way from Abilene and one from Wichita Falls to enjoy the festivities and contribute to education. The Abilene team of David Gage, Ron Harris, Shelley Fort, and Logan Gage won the tournament.

“What a great way to have fun and make a contribution to such a worthy cause,” said Dave Deison, a platinum level sponsor for the tournament. “It provides scholarships to those who would not otherwise be able to attend college.” First National Bank and Jerry’s GM also served as platinum level sponsors with contributions of at least $1000.

Gold level sponsors included Compass Bank, Johnson Controls, Plains Capital Bank, and Roger Williams Dodge with contributions of at least $500. More than twenty additional businesses contributed $200 or more to serve as hole sponsors for the event.

“Those who support the Tech Prep Golf Tournament do so for a very good cause,” said Glenn Yockey, WC Dean of Student Affairs. “The money raised goes directly to local students. We had beautiful weather, a great cause, and it was a well-run tournament—a wonderful day all around.”

Several local restaurants also provided over $800 in gift certificates that were raffled off to help make the scholarship golf tournament a success for future Weatherford College students.
