2009 Career Expo-Sponsored
by the Weatherford College Tech Prep Consortium
January 15, 2009
Once again the Weatherford
College Tech Prep Consortium will be hosting our annual
career expo. More than 26 business and industry representatives
will be on hand to provide potentially life changing information
on future career opportunities for our area high school
seniors. These business and industry representatives will
provide information about education requirement for the
position, salary expectations, what a day in the job looks
like and much more. Students will have an opportunity to
ask questions at the end of each presentation. Due to the
outstanding participation in the past, we must limit participation
to the first 650. We require schools to bring one representative
for every 25 students. These representatives will be given
room assignments upon arrival. Lastly, we must limit each
school to no more than 75 students. Please contact Dr. Kevin
Eaton, 817-598-6336 or keaton@wc.edu, to register your students
for this event.
Golfers Support Education through WC
Tech Prep Scholarship Tournament
Ninety-Six
golfers from local businesses, high schools, and Weatherford
College teed off at SugarTree Golf Course on Saturday October
15,2008 for the 8th Annual WC Tech Prep Scholarship Golf
Tournament.
Tech Prep is a federally funded, grant initiative that allows
qualified technical students to get a head start on their
college education by earning up to 16 hours of dual college
credits while in high school. Since
federal guidelines prohibit the establishment of scholarships
with grant money, the WC Tech Prep Consortium must rely
on other sources for funding scholarships.
Donnie Romine, CEO of Weatherford Regional Medical Center,
the Title Sponsor for the tournament, commented, “Weatherford
Regional Medical Center strongly supports Weatherford College
in providing scholarships to local students to further their
education. This tournament reinforces our commitment of
supporting our local youth and giving back to the community.”
“The
golf tournament is a good example of how the community of
Weatherford supports education and gives back to our local
students,” said John Allison, Director of Career and
Technical Education at Weatherford high school. “To
many of our students, this could mean the difference of
whether or not they will be able to attend college.”
“After
another successful year, this golf tournament will allow
us to award $19,000 in scholarships,” said Dr. Kevin
Eaton, WC Tech Prep Consortium Director. “All the
proceeds of the event go directly to scholarships for area
high school students to attend Weatherford College. This
is our community’s investment in Weatherford’s
economic future.”
Twenty-four teams participated in the four-person scramble
from the Independent School Districts of Azle, Brock, Chico,
Mineral Wells, Poolville, Weatherford, and Weatherford College.
A team representing the Army National Guard also participated.
Local teams from Weatherford Regional Medical System, Crown-Deison
Properties, Compass Bank, Chicken Express, Jerry’s
GM, Johnson Controls, First National Bank, Plains Capital
Bank, Weatherford Aerospace, and Weatherford National Bank
also played in the tournament. Two teams drove all the way
from Abilene to enjoy the festivities and contribute to
education. The Chico team of Melvin Clay, Nathan Clay, Lynn
Clay, and Randy Wells won the tournament; with last year’s
winners of David King, Kevin King, Will Link and Wess Read
from Weatherford Aerospace placing second.
Weatherford Regional Medical Center served as the Title
Sponsor of the tournament with a $2,500 contribution. Platinum
level sponsors of $1,000 each included Crown–Deison
Properties, Jerry’s GM, Compass Bank, Johnson Control,
Chicken Express, and the Texas Army National Guard. Gold
level sponsors with $500 donations were Plains Capital Bank,
First National Bank, and Weatherford National Bank.
In addition to the twenty-six businesses that sponsored
holes for the event, several local restaurants and businesses
provided over $800 in gift certificates and donations to
help make the scholarship golf tournament a success. The
funds raised in this year’s event will allow approximately
28 scholarships to be awarded during the Spring 2009 semester.
