Over one hundred golfers from local businesses, high schools, and Weatherford College teed off at Sugar Tree Golf Club on Saturday, October 10 for the 9th Annual WC Tech Prep Scholarship Golf Tournament.

The golf tournament provides scholarships for area high school Tech Prep students to attend Weatherford College. Tech Prep is a federally-funded grant initiative that allows qualified technical students to get a head start on their college education by earning up to 16 hours of dual college credits while in high school. The WC Tech Prep Consortium must rely on other funding sources since federal guidelines prohibit the establishment of scholarships with grant money. The Texas Army National Guard served as the title sponsor for the tournament with a $3,000 contribution along with Jacobs Engineering's $2,500 sponsorship. "I feel that it was important for us to support the golf tournament because it provides local students the opportunity to further their education," said Sgt. Edward Herrera of the National Guard. "We know that without such financial assistance many of our students will not be able to go to college."

The Weatherford Aerospace team of David King, Kevin King, Wes Read, and Will Link won the tournament with the Sawyer Construction team of Brad Tarr, Jonathan Huffingham, Larry Holloway, and Tommy Fincher placing second. "It was a cold, wet day, but we still managed record participation and sponsorship, said Weatherford College Interim President Dr. Kevin Eaton. "We also knew this would be a tough year for raising scholarship funds, but our business community really came through by providing over $22,000. Their support of this golf tournament clearly demonstrates a firm commitment to our local students and to Weatherford College." Twenty-seven teams participated in the four-person scramble from the Independent School Districts of Azle, Brock, Chico, Graford, Springtown, Poolville and Weatherford; as well as Weatherford College. A team representing the Army National Guard also participated. Teams from Compass Bank, Chicken Express, Jacobs Engineering, Jerry's GM, Johnson Controls, First Financial Bank, First National Bank, Plains Capital Bank, Sawyer's Construction, Struhs Construction, VLK Architects, Kimley-Horn, Texas Wesleyan University, and Weatherford Aerospace also played in the tournament. Three teams drove all the way from Abilene to enjoy the festivities and contribute to education.

Platinum level sponsors of $1,000 each included Chicken Express, Compass Bank, Johnson Control, Struhs Commercial Construction, and Weatherford Regional Medical Center. Gold Level sponsors of $500 donations were Crown-Deison Properties, Devon Energy, First Financial Bank, Jerry's GM, Kimley-Horn and Associates, VLK Architects, Plains Capital Bank, QuestCare, and Sawyer's Construction. In addition to the thirty-nine businesses that sponsored holes for the event, several local restaurants and businesses provided approximately $1,500 in gift certificates and donations for raffle items to help make the golf tournament a success. "These scholarships can be a lifeline to higher education and a better life for our students," said Interim Tech Prep Director Dr. David Russell. "This was a great opportunity for the Weatherford community to support education and invest in our students. The funds raised in this year's event will allow WC Tech Prep to award 20 to 25 scholarships during the spring 2010 semester."
